Some help with a CD/DVD burner...

Nov 7, 2005 1:11AM PST

Hello everyone. My computer (Pentium III, Windows 98)is getting on in years and I will be replacing it in the next few months. Can't afford to do it right now so meanwhile, I want to buy an external CD/DVD burner to use for back-up, i.e. start salvaging data from my old computer (work files in Word & Excel docs) but also to produce disks of illustration work - images created in Photoshop. My problem is finding some kind of CD burner compatible with my elderly system. Is there anything on the market, or possibly track-downable, that could do the job? It doesn't have to be state of the art (and obviously it won't be) - just something to act as a storage device and produce the image disks. Obviously when I buy a new system, it will include the latest standard of DVD burner but I just want something to tide me over. Any thoughts?
Many thanks

...why not get something that you can use for both computers..Just a suggestion, but maybe an external hard drive would better suit your purpose..

Not only could you store all your current data to the external hard drive, but transferring the stored files to your new computer would be extremely easy..Recognize that your Windows 98 machine probably has USB 1.1 which is slower than a new computer would have (USB 2.0), but it should still work on both machines. I've seen that most of the newer Maxtor and Seagate external HD's are supported on Windows 98.

On the other hand, there are still plain vanilla CD-RW drivers available that support Windows 98:

...I'm checking out the links and the hard drive idea could well be the way to go. Getting itchy fingers to replace this old steam-powered duffer anyway - especially with so much great new stuff around - so the new system may well move up the prority list!
Thanks again for your help - much appreciated...

there will be some very inexpensive computers for sale after Thanksgiving. Just a thought, you could put the money for an external drive towards a new computer, buy an inexpensive USB portable drive to transfer your data and have a new system.
