Solid-State, flash-drive camcorders???

Mar 7, 2005 3:47AM PST

I'm looking to get a camcorder and would like a Solid-State, flash-drive camcorders. They seem to be all the rage these days.

All the camcorders that I know about are the Creative DiViCAM 316 and the Samsung SC-X105L (records to Memory Stick Pro media).

Anyone know of more of these so-called hybrid camcorders? I don't care about mp3-playing ones (have an iPod for that), just stills and video capture. Has CNET.com written about these yet?

Thanks.

It depends on the quality that you want. The quality on a flash dive is much lower than on MiniDv or D8mm. John

About a month ago I picked up a JVC GZ-MC100 and I've been having a great time with it.

It's not exactly solid state because the recording media is a 4GB Hitachi Microdrive but you could replace the microdrive with a type II compact flash card if you wanted to.

I've been using the camera to do some volunteer work for Lone Star Boxer Rescue. Since I was shooting for the web I used "Economy" mode and converted to WMV format. Here is a sample if you are interested:

I haven't done much shooting in "Ultra Fine" mode because my none of my computers can even play them without dropping a ton of frames. I need to shoot some and burn to a DVD so I can see what it looks like on a television set. I think it's going to be just fine for what I'm doing.

It looks like these so-called hybrid camcorders haven't matured yet... at least to the amateur level.

I would be using it for home-videos and for some client work (capturing sport-playing sequences of individual payers for recruitment and listing on the www.

Sigh... looks like I'll have to get a mini-dv camcorder. Was hoping to get one that could double as a camera too (an not look goofy).
