Question

Solid State Drives

Apr 16, 2020 12:04PM PDT

I don't know much about solid state drives, except that to my limited technical understanding they're essentially hard drives with no moving parts.

Recently I was in the B&H Photo store in NYC, and for the first time I saw portable SSDs. I didn't know such a thing even existed. I have a portable hard drive, and I noticed that the portable SSDs they had on display were significantly smaller.

Am I correct in my guess that portable SSDs are basically high capacity flash drives?  Or, is there a significant difference between SSDs and whatever technology is used to create flash drives?  (I suppose I could have asked someone at B&H, but I don't trust salesmen, even at a place with as good a reputation as they have.)

Yes, that's correct, if you describe it basically a high capacity flash drive. Or, if you prefer, a portable hard drive with no moving parts.

ssds are faster and less likely to get corrupted like flash drives.
