In an informal research I counted over one hundred laptops at the office and not one has SSD. Yet they work fine. Why would we consider SSD?

I need new laptop, not urgent. Would like to get 512 GB solid state drive with laptop, but prices very high. Assume prices might come down significantly in next year or in 2-3 years if these catch on and sales increase significantly. Anybody have thoughts on this happening anytime soon?
Maybe for now I should just get 500HDD with 7200 rpm or maybe small solid state drive such as 128 GB and get a extern hard drive of some type? If I get 128GB SSD could I add another 256 or 512GB SSD to the same 15.5" Sony laptopthat I might buy? (in year from now if SSD prices come down?)
