Oct 21, 2008 8:12AM PDT

Hi - I really wanted a Bose 3-2-1...until I started reading this forum. Do you guys have a solid suggestions for a 5:1 surround sound system for around 1k?

Thanks,
Jason

but first you need to provide loads and loads and loads of more info.

what are the room dimensions (include height).

how far do you sit from speakers.

what tv are you using, and how is installed, and how high is it.

how many viewers on how many couches.

cheers

That's sort of the problem, I currently live in an apartment in the city (so its small) that I wont be living in for much longer, but I assume the next place I get will be similar sized. So we'll go with a square sized room, 16 feet by 16 feet with 12 foot ceilings. The tv is about 1 foot in from the wall, so 15 feet away, we have a 42 inch Samsung LCD on a TV stand. 2 viewers on 1 couch.

Think city living I guess. This is what drew me towards the 3-2-1 in the first place.

Thanks again

Square room is the worst type possible. Only way its worse is if the height was also 16 ft.

Is there any possibility, whatsoever, of moving the couch away from back wall? You will get multiple benefits, I can think of about 5 benefits off the top of my head.

I believe the subwoofer is a huge ingredient of the HT, but the problem is that apartments are not conducive. If this is true, Id start looking at tactile transducers, but the problem is that one of them can eat half your budget. However, even if it ate half your budget, its still something I would seriously consider. At the expense of your purchases, but that's just me.

There are a lot of nice products out there. It really comes down to personal preference with speakers. Check out one call for good KEF deals, they carry over 100 KEF products, and a lot of them with free shipping.

If you can do an upright bookshelf for center speaker, id look at KRK studio monitors. Perhaps Ascend 170 SEs for front 3, but problem is that's the other half of budget.

Too many ways to skin a cat.

Or you could do a pair of towers (if using transducer) and run them as fullrange. Most towers cant do full range, but at least you might get a bit more midbass when running LFE to transducer.

First off, tell me what you think of the transducer, look at Buttkicker and Earthquake first.

Cheers.

I'm open to all ideas....

...that's why I am here, if the transducer ate half of my budget which would you go with and what else would you pick up to complete the system?

well, if it was ME

Id spend more. HAH, no really jk, but I am implying a question to you:

must all 5.1 pieces, everything, be had at 1k, or would you be willing to either sacrifice:

- no center speaker
- no surrounds
- or non matching surrounds
- older/superceded receiver w/o hdmi

... with or without the possibility of adding on later...

so... its kinda hard when you ask me to be in your shoes... for i am nuts.

For sure, I am going to recommend a superceded receiver w/o hdmi. the only benefit at such price point for hdmi is lossless audio, but thats already very subtle imo, and it really wont matter unless you have either finer equipment, or crank it.

this way, you can allocate more towards speakers.

but your neighbors will hate you

5.1 Surround Sound Speakers with PB10-NSD - Black*
$999

Onkyo refurbished 505
$159

Total = $1,158 (before shipping, add another $100 or so I guess). The SVS package is 10% off until they are in stock, which they guess is end of month. I think they throw in free Avia calibration disc as well.

can you swing it?

DestroysBoseFactor = 5,862

The first review I came across for that sub was titled "SVS PB10-NSD...Too much Bass"? The reviews make this thing sound like the end all of all subwoofers. This thing is no joke. At 399 the price doesnt seem all that bad either. I may get evicted though
