We added another 20F degrees because the work area was that cold. The desolder station was non-adjustable so we had to put 2 techs on that as one tech would hold a second iron as the other desoldered.

You have a good question but as you know, there is no correct answer.

Boy that is a really hard question to answer since there are so many potential variables involved. Heat is just one thing, materials involved quite another. There can be a LOT of difference an example could be doing a rough soldering job involving say plumbing as opposed to doing a critical connection on an electronic device, night and day so different in many aspects.

And this changed over the years as Solder changeds.

In the 60's and even today I encounter many different solders. Even way back then we had good old Pb Sn (lead and tin) with the usual 60/40 mix as well as Silver solder and today, Pb free solder has higher temps and can crack if you don't solder under ideal conditions.

The question is a good one but without knowing the other dozen criteria, can't be answered.

Yep, I totally agree, variables can involve the several variations of solder as you said, acid/resin core, on and on and on, heat is certainly not the only consideration.
