SOLAR ENERGY IS BENEFICIAL TO WHAT EXTENT?

Oct 19, 2018 9:24AM PDT

We are seeing here and there about solar energy, how to use it and uses. But it is costly too!! any thoughts?

Sorry but

This has me thinking of those that read https://lifehacker.com/how-to-find-evidence-to-support-any-argument-1454627815

That is, here there is some initial cost but if it was more costly than coal, wind, hydro or other there would be no power companies building big solar power plants.

They are profit driven.

-> From what I hear the power companies are loving the fact they don't have to pay for fuel for their solar plants.

PS. How about Hydrogen?

24 hours solar energy?
Oct 19, 2018 10:58PM PDT

As a student of science, we need direct sunlight that is too continue and storing it using another day will not be that much beneficial because in some places like hilly areas or north pole for example-where sunlight is almost there for namesake will not take benefits from it, or even if we explain to them uses of solar energy will convert into nothing. well, that's my point of view only.

yeah, hydrogen, wind power will still be in work.

There are well known 24 hour power systems.
Oct 20, 2018 11:41PM PDT

Here's just the short list of systems I can think of this moment.

1. Battery storage. I won't list them all from salt to other type batteries.
2. PUMPED HYDRO. Really neat system, well understood too.
3. Heat storage systems.

know that fossil fuels are dwindling in supply and that investing in newer technology now may be their only hope of survival. As well, what they can patent has value. The profit motive has both its long and short term followers. The epitaphs for those only concerned about today's receipts are many.

The big thing that keeps the Carbon Industry going.
Oct 21, 2018 1:59PM PDT

There's TRILLIONS of dollars of business to be done. Not only that but if they can delay or make it difficult to go with renewables or solar they will.

You can find numbers out there but I'll use the 1.7 Trillion USD a year for the world oil business. That sounds low, anyone have a better source? This doesn't include coal. "Global Coal Trade Amounted to 76,447 Million USD in 2015" which is deep decline.

There's no getting around that the carbon industry will be around for more years than it deserves.

As I've noted before...but will rephrase
Oct 21, 2018 4:39PM PDT

The carbon industry is currently the energy source from which the solar (and other advanced) hardware is produced. It will need to continue to do this until solar panels, windmills, etc., can make the machinery that mines the minerals needed to produce them and still be able to produce enough additional energy to satisfy a growing population that demands more and more of the earth's resources every day. At some point, we'll need to learn that energy cost can't simply be measured in $$$ but in should be measured by the human effort needed produce it. That's what money is anyway, isn't it? Trading labor for other labor...though not always equitably.

It's been all around us even before
Oct 19, 2018 12:25PM PDT

any other source was available. It's been captured and stored for eons and we've been using that stored energy for a very short time. Our earth is like a battery that's been charging for a long time but we're depleting that charge faster than the sun can keep up. We're a planet doomed unless we can become like...
