Question

software vs. security programs

Jan 16, 2020 3:45PM PST

HI, I have an HP laptop with Windows 7 and use Mozilla Firefox and Norton Security. I have been playing games from FB, even today. But late this afternoon I went to play again and got a pop up from Norton that there info on the file was inconclusive and to not use until you know it is safe. It is travelmatch.exe . I got conflicting info from Norton on whether to use or not. There was an icon by travel match and it is from the game. How do I know if it is safe to use please

Answer
Have to agree that it is suspect.

Norton and other AV system watch apps and programs for suspicious behavior. I defer to prior discussions about that.

Unless you know the .exe is safe (you don't) then you don't allow it to run.

suspect

It says it is too new, released less than a week ago. I have a snippet, but it won't copy.

Then you have to know.

What to know:

1. You know this sofware as in where it came from and you trust it.
2. You know that if it wipes out your PC you can recover.

The software exe in question sure sounds like adware. It must be too new as I see no history on it. This means I would not run it unless the company that issued it documents what it is, what it does, etc.

Send it to virustotal.com for a second opinion. They give you the results of 15 antivirus programs. If only 1 or 2 don't trust it, it's usually safe (a socalled false positive).
