General discussion

"Software updates can't find...... " + a spelll check query

Aug 9, 2007 12:29AM PDT

(OS 10.4.9 Safari 2.04)

Apple sent an email re: upgrading iPhoto. I kept getting "Software update can't find the update server.... because of a network problem"

I have been hesitant to run "network diagnostics"

I was able to, as directed by Apple, to download Backup 3. (I am a .Mac subscriber)

I notice that iLife 08 has been released. So I don't know if upgrading from iLife 06 would have to be done first.

Also, is there anyway to allow spell checking in the subject line in these forums?

Thank you.

Angeline

Problems
Aug 9, 2007 1:50AM PDT

Apple sent everyone an email about upgrading to iLife 08 which includes iPhoto.

the "Software update can't find the update server.." is usually because you have lost your internet connection for some reason. However, if you can still surf and send emails, it could also indicate that the update server is swamped.

Network diagnostics will not harm your machine, just let it run and tell you where the problem is. Unless you have changed anything, there is no need for you to let it go ahead and attempt to connect.
If you cannot find the problem to which it refers, go ahead and let it attempt to create a network connection.

iLife 08 has finally been released. It is a complete package and NOT an update to your version of iLife, it is a purchased upgrade. You purchase lLife08, install it and allow it to update your photo library and other stuff.

Spell Check: If you have "Check Spelling and I Type" checked in Safari preferences, it should, but does not always, check the spelling in the subject line. It will check spelling in the actual post

Spell check, for me, has never worked in the...
Aug 9, 2007 2:31AM PDT

... subject line for the cnet forums. In fact, I asked about this myself a couple years ago.

I use iLife 06 extensively, even to produce some professional DVD projects. I have been amazed by the quality of the product.

I downloaded the iPod video to my iBook last night and watched the promo for iLife 08. The interface and organization is very different from iLife 06. If it works as well as suggested then it should be a delight to use... especially on the newer mac-intel computers.

If I didn't need a new computer, I would certainly consider buying it. As it is, I am pushing the limits of what my current iBook G4 can do. I just bought the Master Suite from Adobe and found I can't run the pro level video editing software without the mac-intel set up. Since that is the case, I'm gonna wait till Leopard comes out, and get my new machine. By that time iLife 08 will be packaged with it and won't cost me extra.

Have you done much with iLife, Angeline? If you need tips, please feel free to ask here or email Peter or myself privately. I'm usually working at home (freelance right now) so you can find me available 50% of the day.

All I've used is iPhoto and...

...... played the "radio" in iTunes. (That remote is nice!)

I see they say the new iMac is "all new". Frankly, I don't see how the display could be any better than mine. It i awesome.

I'll wait a couple of months to buy Leopard. Tiger is a good teacher for newbies. Happy

I haven't even opened iChat. I assume that is for between Apple users.

Haven't opened iMovie, either. It says "iMovie HD" so don't know if that means "High Definition". Haven't opened iDVD, either.

I want to use iWeb when I become more proficient.

Spell check works everywhere except in these subject lines.Sad

I suspect this will be my last computer. Perfect display for me. I'll be playing with Comic Life later. Happy No doubt I will buy iLife08 later.

Thank you, Grim. I'l be in touch!

This is the email re: iPhoto I got.
Aug 9, 2007 4:48AM PDT

"You can now easily share photos and movies directly from iPhoto '08 and iMovie '08. Friends and family can see your photo albums in a variety of views. With your permission, they can download photos suitable for 16-by-20-inch prints and contribute photos by browser upload or email. To create a Web Gallery you will need iPhoto '08 version 7.0.1."
(There is a live link there that takes me to the following re: Web Gallery)

"Web Gallery is a new .Mac feature that lets you share photos and movies on the web, in full quality and with a choice of stunning views. (Go and see for yourself.)
To publish photos, first make sure your .Mac account is set up in System Preferences. Next, update your version of iPhoto '08 to 7.0.1 by choosing Software Update from the Apple menu and following the prompts to install."

Of course, I only have iPhoto 06. Happy

As all of my internet connections are working fine, I think I'll give AppleCare a call.

As my iLife 06 was activated on May 15th, I think I'll check to see if I can get a break as the 90 days is not yet up. Happy

Thanks, Pete!

iLife 08
Aug 9, 2007 5:28AM PDT

Angeline,

Before Tuesday, your version of iLife was the latest and greatest. Then iLife 08 was released!

Before Tuesday, everyone that had the latest and greatest iLife, had the same version as you!

It cannot be updated to the new version via the Apple Software Update server. Your Software Update program will not find any updates to your version of iLife.

Your email, and mine, was just a sales attempt.

Does your Software Updates always report that it could not find the server?

Never used it before.
Aug 9, 2007 6:25AM PDT

When I downloaded Backup 3 I just followed the link in the email. I had no problems.

My stuff was all activated on May 15. It would have been nice if the separate and specific to .Mac email re: .Mac and Web Gallery had stated I would need iLife 08 first to use it. (I will play dumb, well, dumber when I phone.) Of course, though Web Gallery is a new feature of .Mac, it is now showing up on my .Mac mail page.

I doubt I will get any more software update notices. I think my OSX is the latest version, as well as Safari.

Thanks again!

These emails
Aug 9, 2007 8:46AM PDT

are just advertising stuff. Either for .Mac users or as a general mail shot to people who elected to receive emails from Apple.

You will not receive installed software update notices from Apple via email. This is always done via the software update application.

Once again, does the software updater ALWAYS say that it cannot find the server?

Yes, it always did.....
Aug 9, 2007 11:17PM PDT

...... when I tried the iPhoto "update" as earlier mentioned.

Never used "Software Updates" before then.

Doubt I will have any more use for it unless they update any "out of the box" stuff, or the applications I bought (AppleWorks, .Mac. I don't see them ever upgrading AppleWorks because of iWorks.)

I appreciate your patience and help ! My questions must seem strange to experienced users. Happy

Software Updates.
Aug 10, 2007 1:46AM PDT

Angeline,

You should be running the Software Update application, under the Apple Menu, at least once a week.
Apple pushes out Security Updates, updates to OS X, iTunes, QuickTime, iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto and any other Apple software that you have installed on your machine, via the Software Update application.

If you have never used it before, you are quite a few updates behind and really need to get caught up.
Did you update to OS 10.4.10? That was the last OS update but QuickTime & iTunes have been updated a number of times since you first got your machine.

Once again, your will NEVER receive an email from Apple telling you about updates to your existing OS or existing applications. All of that is down with the Software Update application that should be run weekly. this is important.
There is a scheduler for it.

BIG problem !
Aug 10, 2007 5:17AM PDT

I spent an hour with a phone tech, during which the Mac OS10 10.4.10 was installed.

She then directed me a a "product specialist" with whom I spent another hour, working on network issues. At the end, his said the machine needed to be taken in.

What bothers me is that network diagnostic said that software update could not connect to the server"

"netboot.macauthority.com"

MacAuthority is the name of where I bought the machine.

All I know to do is have an on site call.

OR do nothing until Leopard is released, then save the on site call for it's installation.

What to do!

About installing Leopard.
Aug 10, 2007 7:33AM PDT

It's always a hassle when hardware issues pop up... but one thing I can tell you for sure Angeline, is that if your hardware is working properly there is no reason you should be worried about installing an updated operating system from apple.

When I upgraded from Panther to Tiger last year, I was pleasantly surprised by how truly easy it was. I inserted the DVD upgrade disc, chose the upgrade option, entered my administrative password... and about an hour and a half later everything was done.

All my previous settings and information remanded intact, and no information was lost. Simply put, unless Microsoft is responsible for the new mac os upgrade, then I would anticipate no problems at all in even the most inept computer owner of experiencing difficulty. Since I know you are far from ignorant when it comes to using a computer, I would bet big money you won't need an in home service trip to upgrade your OS.

Anyone want to take the bet that Angeline can't do it?

Happy Happy Happy Happy

Something not quite right here
Aug 10, 2007 10:56AM PDT

How do you connect to the Internet? Wireless or Wired? Cable or DSL?
Who is the ISP?

In the System Preferences pane, single click the Network icon.

How does it say you are connected?

Where do you go to start Software Update and when do you see that error message?

If you would prefer to email my profile with the info, that's fine.

I'm with Grim on this one. You do not need an on-site call to install Leopard.

However, you do need to sort this network/software problem out.
