Software updates

Ok real new to computers and stuff, people tell me I should update some of my software and things like the drivers for my dvd burner how do I do this and is there any way to do this automatically

There is no blanket answer for this one. While the OS updates are critical, other items you should pick over and only consider if it's broken or is a security issue you need to update.

Which operating system are you using? (Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP SP1, SP2, something else?)
As Bob stated above, Windows Updates are critical and can be done by visitin the Windows Update site while using Internet Explorer.

Do you use Microsoft Office? If so, which version? (Updates come out frequently for these programs.)

Which programs are you thinking about updating?

Some DVD "software" has updates that can help..Which DVD burner software do you use? Nero? Roxio? Something else?

If you can be specific about these things and list them, we might be able to offer more information.
