Why not use the same software as you used for Windows 7? On your old machine download the Windows 8 upgrade assistent from windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-assistant. When you run it it will tell you all you need to know about compatibility and new versions. That should cover 90% at least.
Then, if necessary, come back here for the remaining 10%.

I am working with my first Windows 8 machine. could you please recommend any good programs that I should use on this for the following.. I am trying to streamline the programs I install on the machine:-
a. Zipping and Unzipping files - I know there is in built support for zip, but what about all the other formats. In the past I have used 7-Zip or Win Zip
b. Audio tools / DVD tools - I want to covert to / from mp3 to wav, edit sound recordings, edit DVD's, produce DVD's from video content. On my past machine I used the following:-
