Software to record entries generated by new software downloads...

by Mosonnow / March 31, 2004 11:50 PM PST

Dear Grif

I recall that you recommended some software that would record the "before and after" position of one's computer after downloading new software.

I cannot remember if in this forum, or perhaps Computer Help.

The software did not do anything (i.e. clean or restore) but provided info on All files in whatever directory which had arrived from the software just downloaded.

Does this ring any bells please?

Thank you

Dear Bob b: Do you use the Devhood software? I am concerned that ....

the reviews appear to date back to March 2002, so it might not be compatible with other software in 2004?

BTW I am running on Win ME.

Thank you for the link, but not sure ...

Sorry Mo, It Doesn't Ring A Bell...But...
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / April 1, 2004 7:07 AM PST sure looks like the Devhood software suggested by Bob should do what you're asking for.

Hope this helps.

I use this version religiously when installing just about anything and many times when performing a simple change to see just where things get written and what. I started with the original PCMag program right after conception - now updated, and would not want to do without.

Thanks All: I decided to get InCtrl5 from PC Mag, because ...

as well as Bill's recommendation, their site ( I think) gives some 12 pages of info about how it works and what to do with it - i.e. the sort of help info one normally gets only after a download.

Whilst the software is free, I had to pay to become a subscriber of PC Mag, though no bad thing, I guess, for other useful info and software the sub to the mag provides.

The download worked OK. I am personally very recalcitrant about playing with the registry so am reading the info first, before trying out the program.

Thanks and regards

May I suggest you prepare a logging folder under the parent folder for the purpose of your named logs.

Learn to click and use the Report filename: button first and ascertain the filename wanted for saving the report to, then use the Install program: button for browsing to the executable.

You can use the Pre-install snapshot by running Inctrl with a logged filename, make a change to something somewhere on your computer, have Inctrl finish, and you'll be presented with a report of just what took place because of that change -- one of my main uses.
