The mac and the OS might be 64 bit, but movies, even after conversion, aren't.
The usual way to do this is to use a hardware device called a DVD-recorder that accepts input from your old VHS camera via one of its video outputs. That's what I did 15 years ago or so. Worked fine.
To use any conversion program on your Mac, you first must be able to view it without recording. How do (plan to) connect your VHS camera to your Mac, and what program on your Mac are you using (or planning to use) to view your movies?
If you don't have the necessary hardware, it's best to have it done by some company offering such a service.
I'm wanting to save old family movies on VHS to the computer. I have a MacBook Pro which is 64 bit. Is there any software out there for me?
