General discussion

Software recommendations welcome

Dec 17, 2005 2:03PM PST

Now that my Norton's subscription is ending in a couple of weeks, I've decided to ditch the memory hogging antivirus/firewall program in favor of Avast and ZoneAlarm.

My question is this, what other privacy/protection utilities do you recommend?

I currently run both Adaware and SpyBot S&D, so combined with Avast and ZoneAlarm, will I be in need of anything else?

I Can't Help But Suggest CCleaner ! Great Benefit to ....

anyone for both privacy & effectiveness.Free from links here:

Additionally strongly suggest Mozilla or Firefox as your main browser (uses Sun Java). Will save you lots of grief
available here:
http://www.mozilla.org/download.html
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
There are several more others will suggest to be sure, but these are my main ones.
One other: McAfee Stinger Stand Alone Virus/Trojan Remover. A new one comes out about 1 every 4 or 5 weeks. Very limited (75 most current & common & all their varients. Get each month and store on floppy, USB thumb drive or CD. Small but its beauty is it won't be affected if you get a AV/scanner destroying malware.
You can run it right from floppy or ? if necessary and it might get you functioning well enough to get further help from sites. Here:

All are Free ! Enjoy !! Grin

I would also add these
Dec 17, 2005 8:02PM PST

which are free.

SpywareBlaster (a blocker only, download it, check for updates, enable it and leave it alone except for checking for updates occasionally)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareGuard (similiar to SpywareBlaster but works in a different way and does not update as often for that reason.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

Ewido SS (trojan scanner which turns free after the 14 day trial, you only lose Process Guard and the auto updating but can still update manually)
http://www.ewido.net/en/

Microsoft AntiSpware Beta (still in Beta but I like is because besides the scanner, it has realtime protection and watches the registry among other things)

Question about SpywareGuard
Dec 20, 2005 3:48AM PST

Every time I start SpywareGuard, a Windows Installer box pops up and then a another box pops up asking me to insert my "Backed up Dell programs CD" (or something like that). Any idea what is causing this? Can it be fixed?

- Collapse -
What are you doing to 'start' SpywareGuard?
Dec 20, 2005 6:01AM PST

It should be running in the background. There is a SpywareGuard icon in the system tray, where you can right-click and open it for various options. Is that what you mean by start?

You can also update through the LiveUpdate icon SG leaves on your desktop. Is this what you mean?

Or perhaps you meant when you "start" to install it?

You can also access error messages from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/downloadfaq.html At the bottom of the page.. check FAQ.

Otherwise.. try posting back and specify what you mean when you say you are trying to ''start'' SG.

Clarification
Dec 20, 2005 10:14AM PST

I have to set to load during startup, so it's when I boot my computer. However, to make sure it's SpywareGuard that is doing it, I closed it and re-opened it via the Start -> Programs menu, and the same things happen. "Windows Installer" starts, and then this box pops up:

http://tinyurl.com/abbq3

After a few seconds, this window then pops up:

http://tinyurl.com/berct

When I cancel out of both of those, I get the following error message:

http://tinyurl.com/bw53a

After I cancel out of everything, SG seems to run fine, but I don't want to have to keep canceling that thing every time I boot up my machine.

Btw, it also happens when I start SpywareBlaster.

Let me know if you need any more info to diagnose...

tdp.. have you resolved your previous booting
Dec 20, 2005 11:20AM PST

and upgrading problems when you posted here http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-7587_7-0.html?forumID=69&messageID=1606144&threadID=143321 I've read through a few of your posts and am wondering if it really has anything to do with the two Javacool programs. Could this be?

First and foremost. I am far from expert. But I do have both programs. You say, ''to make sure it's SpywareGuard that is doing it''. Doing what?

You also said, ''I closed it and re-opened it via the Start -> Programs menu'' I don't see how you're opening SpywareGuard from the Start menu. The only thing I can open from the Start menu for SpywareGuard is the LiveUpdate.

Have you had any problems installing any other programs, since your booting issues began? If these are the only programs you're having problems with and all other issues are resolved, I'd first look at this link (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html )
and see if I could find a ''like issue'. (Check FAQ)

If I didn't find that helpful, I personally would uninstall both programs and reinstall them. (After reinstalling the first one, I'd see if the problem remained. If not, I'd reinstall the second) That is what I would do. Having said that, I don't have any other issues going on. So this may be a totally different situation for you.

I'm still having problems understanding what you've said. Perhaps someone else might. Give it some time.

No doubt someone will be along to add their comments..

Best of luck..
Carol

I'm not sure how I'm confusing you, but I can answer a couple of your questions...

(I wish this forum had more features like "quote" etc. Wink )

Anyway, here goes. You said: "I've read through a few of your posts and am wondering if it really has anything to do with the two Javacool programs. Could this be?"

It's definitely the Javacool programs. The RAM issue I had isn't causing this because I've reverted back to my two 64MB RAM sticks. (Unless whatever was causing my inability to upgrade is also causing this?)

================================================

You said: "You say, ''to make sure it's SpywareGuard that is doing it''. Doing what?"

Making the Windows Installer box pop up. I've never seen this window before installing SB and SG.

================================================

You said: "You also said, ''I closed it and re-opened it via the Start -> Programs menu'' I don't see how you're opening SpywareGuard from the Start menu. The only thing I can open from the Start menu for SpywareGuard is the LiveUpdate."

My start menu has shortcuts to both "SpywareGuard" and "SpywareGuard LiveUpdate". I can't explain why that differs from you, but I definitely have the option to open the program via the start/programs menu. Maybe it's a Win2k thing?

================================================

You asked: "Have you had any problems installing any other programs, since your booting issues began?"

No. During this time I have uninstalled Norton's Internet Security 2005, installed avast!, ZoneAlarm, ewido SS, CCleaner, SB, and SG. Only SB an SG have caused this window to pop up.

================================================

You said: "f I didn't find that helpful, I personally would uninstall both programs and reinstall them. (After reinstalling the first one, I'd see if the problem remained. If not, I'd reinstall the second)"

Unless I find a solution on the www.wilderssecurity.com forums, this is what I'm going to try. Unfortunately I won't be able to mess around with it until Thursday night since I'm at work now and I won't be home tonight. Wink

Thanks for you patience and your help, Carol. Happy

a quote feature Wink Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. If anything, you've at least clarified it for others, who may be able to help - since I'm without answers. Sad

As I mentioned, I had seen your post at Wilder's, while trying to see if I could find something. The only thing I can suggest at this point, is to start a post of your own, in lieu of adding your problem within another's post - albeit a ''somewhat'' like situation. It may get more attention.

Although you're not getting either of the 2 error messages regarding the installer files, I'm wondering if it isn't part of the overall issue. (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/idx/18/0/ )

And lastly, can I assume you've read through Javacool's Software Knowledge Base?

Good luck with it. I think both programs are well worth the headaches you're having. Wink

at Wilders but Wilders is the support forum for ALL of Javacool's programs so I would think your best chance for a solution would be there. Javacool is a frequent visitor to that forum also so if the question was posted in the correct part of the Wilder's forum I would assume you would get an answer soon but please be patient, they are busy.

Mostly a W.A.G. but.....Dell Like Some Others Has Customized
Dec 20, 2005 3:25PM PST

some of the programs on your 'puter(HP laptop has similar).Copies of these program additions/alterations(installed at factory) were supplied to you with new computer on a CD. Hopefully you got that CD as well as the retail version of you OS (XP?).
The HP laptop one included "BackWeb" in guise of driver Update & system continuity checks/ online auto repair. Every time it went on web it called home and uploaded current info about system & history. This I consider spyware behaviour despite any legitimate uses.
Likely your anti-spyware scanners have found similar and disabled/uninstalled same. Now when you first boot up Dells boot process checks to make sure its spyware is there & functional. When it finds it's NOT, it asks you to put supplied disk in CD drive bay so it can re-install and get its' expected revenue stream( selling surf habits) back up. It may also auto-install any performance updates/ bug fixes at the same time. Think "Live Update".
If I was less suspicious, I might beleive it has found some corrupt sys files and wants a clean source to fix them with.
Myself, I removed all with Spybot and turned OFF this "Feature" in config. I can always go manually for updates, including I'm sure re-implacement of spyware, (and then again remove w/ Spybot). Not as Paranoid as it seems!! Note: When you broke the seal on your new computers packaging, you had agreed to all conditions attached to all software installed within. Too Bad that you had no way to read these conditions before you could see what was installed(by opening packaging).
One poster reported on this a year or two ago.
Some how sounds likely as they're Dell pop ups you're getting. Devil

Problem solved
Dec 23, 2005 12:21AM PST

I finally got rid of the Windows Installer error. I noticed that the window popped up when I tried closing and re-opening Microsoft AntiSpyware, so I knew it wasn't a SB/SG thing (which I mistakenly "insisted" it was...oops!). Because of this, I decided to just pop in the CD it was asking for and ran the "repair" option on it. Now I don't have the problem anymore.

I'm wondering if when I uninstalled Norton Internet Security that a necessary file or two got deleted? Anyway, my system is back to running smooth.

Thanks for all the input from everyone!
