Question

Software problems after OS-update. Help needed!

Apr 26, 2013 8:12PM PDT

Hi. Yesterday I updated my OS, and suddenly a lot of my software won't work: Safari, Mail OnyX, etc.etc.
(Luckily, Chrome still works, so I can write this...)

Whenever I try to open one of the programs, I get this message that the software suddenly is aborted, with the options of Ingoring, Report or Open Again. Well, I can't open again. The same time happens every time.

When i try to open Safari now, and I check what's written in this report, it says:

----
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000000
Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread
----

I have tried several things:
- Using Time Machine to go back to before I updated.
- Rebooting.
- Trying to use OnyX - that software won't work either Silly
- Using the Disk Utility software. It checked the disk, foud some errors, and I fixed it. But the problem goes on.
- I have even tried to reinstall OSX. Still no solutio.

I'm getting quite desperate, since I need my computer working for my business.

I have even thought of doing a clean install of the OS. But... Well, is that the only solution?

Hoping somebody can help me.

And yes, I have a MacBook Pro (version 3,1), 2.4 GHz with OSX 10.6.8.

Answer
What version of OS X did you have before the update?

What was the update that you used?

I'm not sure :p

10.6.7 maybe ?
I update it on a regular basis, and there has never been any problems so far.

If you want spesific info, please tell me how to find it. I guess there must be a sort of a update log on my mac, but I do not know how to find it. I'm not really "into" the technical stuff... I use mac to avoid it Happy

BTW: If I try the software update now, I actually get the same error as with the other programs... *sigh* Looks like ma Mac is totally fu**ed up Sad(

Disconnect everything from the Macbook

Fire it up and go to Disk Utilities
Do a Repair Permissions, it's a long shot.

Can you get to System Preferences? If so, create a new Admin account, log out and log into that one.
Same problem?

Do you have the discs that came with that machine?

If so, boot from it and see if your problem still exists. Use the Disk Utility, on the DVD, to check the disk again.

Time for a re-install of OS X

Make sure your backup is up to date,
boot from the DVD
and follow the instructions.

Be aware that one of the options is to Format/Initialize the drive. Don't go there
