Software Installation

Mar 22, 2004 8:26PM PST

I recently purchased a digi camera, instructions were that if I had Windows 98 I would have to set up a document name E:/Win/DIRECTX8 1b REDIST PACKAGE.EXE (E is CD DRIVER)before I set up driver programme of the digital camera.
I havent a clue as to how to do this....any advice?

Re:Software Installation

Fifelass,

It appears like the camera's driver set up program is asking you to "install" the DirectX 8.1b using the driver CD that was supplied with the camera. You may already have the DirectX 8.1b program installed and you can check by clicking on Start-Run, type "Dxdiag", thenclick on OK. If DirectX is installed, a DirectX diagnostics screen will come up with the "DirectX Version" number in the lower part of the screen. If you don't have DirectX 8.1b or later, you'll need to install from the CD.

If that's the case, place the CD in the CD drive. If it attempts to autorun, exit the program, then double click on "MY Computer", RIGHT click on the CD drive (E drive), choose "Explore" from the menu. When the window opens, look for the "Win" folder on the CD, double click it, then double click on the "DIRECTX8 1b REDIST PACKAGE.EXE" that appears to be listed there. (Make sure to disable your antivirus program first so it doesn't interfere with the installation.) After the installation of DirectX 8.1b is complete, restart the computer and go back to installing your camera software.

If you can't seem to get it installed from the CD, here is the Microsoft download link for DirectX 8.1b:

Hope this helps.

I Never Install Camera Software: Do Not Need It In Most Cases
Mar 23, 2004 9:10AM PST

If you have a digital camera that does not have some form of removal memory card, then you will have to install its software.

But, if your camera has a removable memory card, then it is not necessary to install software. Instead, use some form of card reader because it is much faster.

Download details: DirectX 8.1b Runtime for Windows 98 and Me
DX81eng.exe
download DX81eng.exe and install it
Now you can download and see the photos

Recently had similar problem

What happens is the installation disk is set to automatically install Windows XP drivers. What you need to do is direct it to the 98 drivers. Put in the installation disk and reboot. When it starts asking for
drivers, click on the drive(E?) with the disk. May take several tries to click on the 98 drivers. Don't be afraid to go "Back" till you hit the right combination. Good Luck and post back. chuck

digital Camera

Why instal the camera software?
Most cameras memory cards can be read by just pluging the USB cable into the camera and PC (WinXP) and rebooting (Win9Cool. The OS will find the new USB conection and instal the driver required (may ask for the original OS CD). Then you can transfer the files (pictures) off the camera with My Computer or Windows Explorer (camera shows up as another drive letter). But, if the camera's software also installs picture editing software that you want to use then you have to follow their (camera mfgr's) instructions for installation, but in the long run you'd be much better off getting adobe Photoshop/Paint Shop Pro etc.
