Software Design Network Controllers (SDN)

I am somewhat new to network security and until recent times my concentration has manly focused on network administration (LAN switching /routing). My question is how does software design network (SDN) controllers integrate with different vendors and current LAN/WAN technologies and protocols? Does this add another point of failure or vulnerability to networks if things are not properly designed and implemented? Is this similar to ACL's/ACE's?
