socket775 cooler & hs replacement help

My CPU cooler on my P4 vibrates on bootup and then quiets as long as cpu is up. I ordered a Masscool 8W0141B1M3G / Socket 775 / to replace when it gets worse. I see there are 2 release levers around existing cooler. Replacement comes with 4 twist down screws and a black ?X? plate. Do the 2 levers release the P4 or just the cooler? What is the "X" plate used for? I?ve never done this before, so any ideas are welcome. Thanks!

Why is the cooler vibrating is it loose? The levers secure the cpu, the cooler should be fastened to the motherboard on four corners by a pop in type of fastener. The X plate with the new cooler would go under the motherboard for the cooler to fasten/screw into. The Xplate should also have an insulating gasket to prevent it from shorting out the underside circuits of the MB

The cooler is not vibrating, just the fan assembly. Must be a ball bearing problem. Do I need to use the new X plate if I am just replacing cooler (fan&hs) with new one? Thx.

Not unless you want to field strip your computer and take out the MB. The X plate goes on the underside of the Mb which is dandy if you are in the process of putting together a new system. What you need to do if you wish to replace the existing cooler/heat sink is buy one that has the four push pins that snap into the MB.

A couple of extra tips:

1- make sure the power connector on the cooler has the same number of pins as the plug-in socket on the MB ... some are three pin and some are four pin.

2- use a good thermal paste (compound) such as Arctic Silver 5 and follow directions closely if you have not done this before.
