So the new nano is the same price as the old one?

Sep 2, 2010 12:28AM PDT

From what I understand, they got rid of video playback, pictures, and the camera, added a touch screen and FM Radio and are selling it at the same price as the model it replaced?

I seriously hope no one is eating this up, because that is some major stupidity.

Its not for me, but I think Apple realized that the Nano

is really just a music player now. Anybody who really wants to watch video or take pictures is likely going t go the extra 70 bucks and get get the iPod Touch anyway. Apple appears to be streamlining and clarifying their product line: iPod Nano is a mp3 player for your kids or the gym, the iPod Touch is a multifunction next gen device.

The camera on the last Nano pretty much sucked and the smaller they make the device the less camera they can pack in. I think the touch screen is weird, especially if you are going to wear this thing like the shuffle. But then again I'm not their target audience.

Yes it is isn't it still only 8G and 16G and wouldn't it make sense that they are the same price

My point is
Sep 2, 2010 12:40PM PDT

....last generation had a lot more features for the same capacity and price. I know touchscreens cost money, but at this point, I don't think too many people are going to buy a 6G nano over the feature rich 5G nano just because it has a touchscreen. It's a hard pill to swallow.

A list of features

Doesn't make a good product. A consumer experience does. And Apple is one of the few companies that gets this. Touchscreen is a better way to interact with the device.

Touchscreen being better....

Is an opinion. I personally like buttons on my music player. It makes it easier to change songs and such without having to take the player out of wherever. The only reason I have a touch is because you can do more with it. A simple music player doesn't need a touch screen.

And I didn't say it makes it a better product, but to a lot of people, a device that, for less money, can play video, play music and can take and show pictures sounds a lot better than a device that only plays music, but looks fancy.

Nicolas is right. Apple doesn't do the big laundry list of

specifications. They never have and they never will. They hit a few main points and they hit them well. If people want long lists of specs there are always Archos devices (which is the exact opposite of Apple, everything but the kitchen sink thrown into a device and very little polish).

That said, a touchscreen on a device meant to be worn on clothing seems a bit odd as its hard to access and see what you are doing with the thing pinned to your lapel.

Maybe consumers will revolt against the new design but I somehow doubt it. I suspect the market for the Nano is getting smaller every year. The iPod Touch is the flagship model now. Its highly possible that the decision to ditch the video camera and video playback capabilities came from negative customer reactions to the last model. The screen and camera were just to small to be of any real use.

The new iPod nano is $50 too expensive.

A $99 4GB version might sell.
The iPod nano was already falling in sales compared with the iPod Touch.

And on my last trip.

Which involved no less than planes, trains and automobiles I saw more iPads than iPods.

A sign?

Amazing....

....as I've only seen one iPad in the wild. Thank goodness I have my 3-4 generation old nano still. Great form factor, simple, does the job without all this BS crap they are trying to sell us. Why the heck do I need a touch screen on my Nano?! When this one dies, I may just find a non-Apple player just to flee the high prices and the craptacular iTunes.
