General discussion

so many choices - advice greatly needed

Jun 13, 2008 5:54AM PDT

Hi. I am on the market for a new camera and have researched for several weeks and now I am more confused than ever.

I currently have a Kodak 3MP - 1.8 LCD - 4x optical zoom and been very pleased with it, after 4 years it's time to upgrade.

I want a higher zoom, LCD and Viewfinder - size not a major factor.

My subjects are kids, animals and scenery - day and night.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Yep, your old camera is getting a bit long in the tooth.

I suggest you start by looking at the Canon A590IS.
It does not have more optical zoom, but it does have image stabilization and all of the modern bells and whistles.
All for about $160.

There are some cameras with a zoom of around 6X (Canon A650IS and A720IS).

From there you jump to 10X and longer zooms.
These tend to be larger cameras due to the big zoom.
There are some terrific cameras in this group.
Sony H7
Canon S5-IS
Panasonic FZ8
Nikon P80

Panasonic has a relatively small 10X zoom camera, that is popular.
The Panasonic TZ5.
...but it does not have a viewfinder.
