Snow Leopard HP IP Printing

Nov 19, 2009 5:58AM PST

Since the 10.6.1 update I have been unable to network print to my HP Laserjet 1200 printer. The printer is working, just plug it in to a USB port and it's recognised and prints away. Connect it via a ethernet switch (TimeMachine) and the HP JetDirect ethernet to USB adaptor and nothing.

I have installed both of Apple's recent updates (post 10.6.2) with the following effects:

1st issue of the HP drivers enabled the system to recognise and select the printer. When printing the progress would go to 9% and then no more until timeout. Stalemate

2nd issue of he HP drivers allowed the printer to be seen by the system but when configuring via "add printer" I get as far as "determining installable options" and no further.

The system profiler sees the printer so the Mac is able to detect the printer on the network.

I have:
Reset the printers via the system preferences pane - no change
Repaired Permissions - no change
Re-Installed the printer drivers - no change
Zapped the Pram
Installed the printer using IP and JetDirectSocket

My Mac is a MacPro with all software bang up to date. There are no problems with direct connected printers, only with the one and only network printer.

The HP web site says that the drivers for my printer are contained in Apple's OSX Leopard installation but none of them work!

Any ideas or suggestions on what to try next?

IP address of the Printer

do you know what it is?

Did you create an HP TCP/IP Print socket using the IP address of the printer?

IP Address of the Printer
Nov 19, 2009 10:37PM PST

Yes, I printed a test page (a button on the ethernet / USB interface) and got the IP address of 192.0.0.192. When entering it into the printer set up it says it's a valid address. Then using any of the options Line Printer Daemon or Internet Printing Protocol or HP Jetdirect -Socket has an affect on the outcome. The printer get's created and the print job goes ahead and then.....nothing. The message in the print queue is "unable to connect to printer; will retry in 30 seconds..."

Should I be entering the subnet mask as well? This is a simple ethernet network with one Mac, TimeMachine, ADSL modem and Printer on it.

It struck me that the MacPro has two ethernet ports so I connected the printer to that port alone. No change! It seems to be software and not hardware

It would be better

if the IP address of your Printer was in the same ballpark as the rest of your network.
Your ADSL modem is also a DHCP server which is probably sending out IP addresses to those that request them in the range of 192.168.x.x
If the printer has an ethernet connection, one that does not require that USB adapter, then your best bet would be to purchase a small switch, connect it to the modem and connect all your other ethernet devices to it.
Set the IP address of the printer to something above the DHCP range of IP addresses of the Modem/Router, 192.168.x.200 for example, where x matches the address used by the modem, and reconfigure the IP printing again.

Take a look at this site

Better Except....
Nov 20, 2009 4:33AM PST

Thanks for the suggestion on the IP addresses. However, the Time Capsule is the DCHP server and the Mac, printer ethernet/USB adaptor (both HP) and ADSL wireless modem are connected to it. So the Time Capsule is the switch. The ADSL modem has the DCHP server and wireless switched off.

All this is exactly the same as before the software updates that broke it. Apple's 10.6.2 and the HP printer drivers that don't work. Granted the printer is old (only USB) but it's reliable and not heavily used so I'm reluctant to replace it simply because it no longer prints from the network. It's very handy being able to print wirelessly from my MacBook Pro.

Ahh, a Time Capsule and not a Time Machine as stated

I still wonder if the IP address on the USB/Ethernet device would be better off being something that is actually on your network range and subnet mask.

Can you uninstall the existing HP drivers, which may not be the ones that came with 10.6, and install the HP drivers again from the SL install disk?

Printer Sub-Net Range
Nov 22, 2009 1:10AM PST

Apologies for the confusion, I did mean Time Capsule and not Time Machine, quite different things and unintentionally misleading.

I'd like to explore the Subnet Mask before using Pacifist to extract the original HP drivers from the Leopard DVD however, they all match!

At the moment I have the following:

Time Capsule IP Address: 192.168.0.3 Sub-Net 255.255.255.0
MacPro IP Address: 192.168.0.5 Sub-Net 255.255.255.0
HP Printer IP Address: 192.0.0.192 Sub-Net 255.255.255.0

I have managed to use the second ethernet port on the MacPro and forced the DCHP to a manual address that did not match the printer - result - the printer configured and worked. So I can assume that the driver is now confirmed as OK. So I think it's something to do with my ethernet / Time Capsule set up.

Not sure why, but

at least it is printing.

Good job.

Snow Leopard HP IP Printing

Hi there,

I was reading all this, but when you both start explaining all about ipi well i couldnt follow.
I have the same trouble as mrmacfixit, but my knowledge about systems and ip is limited.
Can anyone explain to me step-by-step what i have to do to use the printer(Laserjet 1200 series).
I have a notebook the white one.

Regards

mrmacfixit does not have the problem

and almost all Apple laptops are white.

Is your laserjet 1200 ethernet capable?
If so, connect it to your network and give it an IP address that is in the range of your network.

Go to the network preference pane, Network and see what the IP address of your Macbook is.

Let us know that, along with what your network consists of, and we'll go from there

Im at the office.

By saying ethernet capable, you mean that is on the network and different people could print using this laserjetjet1200.
If so, yes it is ethernet capable.

ethernet is currently active and has the IP address 172.16.234.42.

Windows platform.

What else you need.

Windows platform?

You said you were on a Mac.

Assuming you are on a Mac, like you said, you would need to configure your Mac to use that printer.
Depending on what version of OS X you are using, another handy piece of information, there are different ways to do this.

However, all of them involve connecting to the printer using the HP socket as the connection method.
You will find that option, or words to that effect, in the same place as the IP printing choice.
Once you have the HP socket method connected, you can either put in the IP address of the printer or browse for the printer.
The HP Socket should recognize the printer and the system will load the relevant driver.

Hope that helps a little.

Sorry about the HP Socket thing, I cannot remember what it is called right now

HP Jet Direct Socket

is what that thing I couldn't remember is called.
HP's use a Jet Direct card or Jet Direct IC on the board to provide ethernet connectivity
