sndvol32.exe loading

When I boot-up I often get up to 100 copies of sndvol32.exe loading up and often if I click the speaker icon to adjust the volume a number of volume controls appear on the screen and I can't get rid of them other than by going into 'task manager' and under 'processes' ending all of the sndvol32.exe processes.
Does anyone have an idea as to why this is happening? And if so, how might I correct it?
Thanks, Guys.
