Given the specs, and you don't have to answer, why the 64GB card?

I have an SD card reader in my laptop and since my tab is only 8gb I tried putting my music on my card so it could read from there for vacation. the tablet wanted to format the card and will not recognize the music but when I put into my computer I can see the music. how can I get my tab to see the music? SD card is 64 gb. do I need to use a 32? I was hoping to put movies on there as well but one step at a time. thank you for reading and I hope someone can help.
