Smoke (Go) Away Update

Mar 15, 2004 7:30AM PST

Hi,

It's been a week without a cigarette - a long, miserable week. It's hard to know if the herbs included in the program help at all in a physical way or are just available to provide a distraction. In spite of the nicotine cravings and a feeling of restlessness, I'm hoping to win this battle and will continue to take the rest of the capsules as directed.

I've never smoked, but my patients tell me that the first couple of weeks are the worst and things should get better.

I smoked for nearly 30 years and quit 3 years ago. I still have cravings for nicotine but I'm used to them so they're easy to ignore. I don't know if the feeling ever goes away entirely but it does get easier to live with every day. The first two weeks are the worst. If you do get an unbearable urge you feel destined to cave in to, get some nicorette, it worked for me.

We're all behind your efforts! I think I heard that in 2 weeks the actual nicotine is out of your system, so it's psychological after that.

You can do it!!

echo Clay, I've been off cigs for 1 year, 65 days 17 hours after heavy smoking for 55 years (lung cancer gave me motivation to quit). Still crave cigs, but after the 1st few weeks your system nick will be gone and you will be able to shrug it off much better. I started the 12 week patch system which slowly reduces your nick input. Was able to discontinue the patch after 8 weeks. Also took ZYBAN pills for a few days, but it didn't agree with me.

The longer you go without a cig the better your will power to resist. Like I said, I still really miss the cigs. Last X-Mas while visiting relatives, I went outside with the smokers and sneaked a half cig twice. It didn't bother me to get off the wagon just a couple times that day, and I know better than to do but maybe once or twice a year and thats that.
