SmartEye IR receivers???

Aug 8, 2009 8:56AM PDT

Hi everyone I'm new to the forum and I was hoping some one could help me out.

My parents are looking to upgrade their home theater set up. My mom would really like to have all of our A/V components in a closed up cabinet (with out glass) underneath our TV. I told her that we couldn't do that unless we reconfigured everything with RF stuff. However, we went to a high end furniture store earlier today and the Interior designer we talked with showed us that some of their entertainment centers came with this thing called a SmartEye that she told me uses the IR receiver in the TV to control all of the components tucked away below. I had never seen something like that but thought it was a great idea. So, when I got home I tried to find out more information online but unfortunately I really wasn't able to find anything.

All I was able to find was a .pdf from the furniture maker that includes the SmartEye:
http://www.sligh.com/shared_assets/manuals/SmartEye.pdf

And a British website of the manufacturer, but what is up there is not the same from the .pdf:
http://www.bluedelta.co.uk/smart-eye.html

I could not find anything about ordering the product in the U.S or anything similar. I was just wondering if anyone else had ever heard of this or something similar and how well it works.

Thanks for the help

It will be more reliable if you simply just get a native

RF remote. Then use the spiders (unless you have fancier connections, which you probably don't, unless you bought pretty fancy gear).

For instance, this will do the trick, and it's only $85 shipped for both native IR/RF, WITH the base station.

IMO, way more reliable than Harmony, and way less of a hassle to program.

you can spend more for sure, but this is the best value. this remote can't discretely control TWO DIFFERENT av systems at the same time (w/o affecting the other system for instance).

otherwise, the sky is the limit for automation. having a pro program something like crestron, rti, whatever, costs a whole lot, but you get reliable performance that even grandma can easily control.

for your cabinet, there are two main issues. 1. Heat dissipation. 2. size enough for components. choose wisely. personally, I don't like the idea of electronics up front. how about a closet? 35ft hdmi is mebbe $50, and that remote I linked is $85. That's only $135 to be able to put the components anywhere else in the room.

otherwise, some av stand links

otherwise, I say save the thousands of dollars, have it all even neater, with both better video and audio performance. well not video in your case, but audio potential increase is pretty great w/o the cabinet up front. possibly of epic proportions in fact, but whatever.

Google...

IR repeater. 'Smarteye' just looks like a brand.

The first link is for diffrent rooms all going to one A/V setup and the 2nd link is for one room only setup.

One thing you have to keep in mind is heat... Heat will reduce the life of electronics.

thanks givemeaname, thats what i was trying to find was some other brands of the same technology.
I guess know, I'm wondering how well they actually work and is there a certain brand you would recommend for the repeaters?

jostenmeat, I would probably like to stick with this instead of switching ti RF because we already have a IR Harmony that would just be easier to continue using that.

As for both of your concerns about cabinet selection, we went to the furniture store today and got some info on http://www.customshoppefurniture.com/ so we can have everything fit all of our components just right. And, in the catalogue I saw that they can install vented shelfs and vent fans in the back so heat shouldn't be to much of an issue.

Our room is very awkward and the TV HAS to go in a corner (sliding door on one wall, fireplace on another) so haveing a custom fit cabinet that slides perfectly in the corner is a must for them.

they really are just topical impressions I have, but my suggestion was so that it WOULD be easier. Everything I have read points towards RF being more reliable than wireless IR repeaters.

And it's just me, but I cannot stand Harmony remotes. I used to own one, and I've programmed a few.

Good luck.
