Small suggestion: Notification system...

Jul 25, 2007 11:47PM PDT

Could the notification system added a few months ago, designed to cover forum changes, Cnet events, etc, be extended to the forum mainpage? Whenever Cnet has a major forum glitch the forums themselves become unaccessible, but the Cnet forum mainpage (http://forums.cnet.com) almost always remains available. That could prove to be quite valuable, alerting members that the forums are down, what's going on, and how long it may be before it's back up and running. That could alleviate concerns it's on the user's end, that the engineers are unaware of the problem, etc.

Just a thought.

But,will a major forum glitch effect the notification system, such as the e-mail notifications,if so how then will one be directed to the main page (forum directory)

It's all separate...

I'm thinking on the small scale, like the 'Ask the Editor Live - Now!' display across the top of the forum pages, not e-mail notifications. However, the notification system, PM system, profiles, and even the forum mainpage are independent of the forums themselves, so they remain accessible in the event of a major failure. So far it's been used to alert us about Cnet events, upgrades, and planned downtime, but not for unexpected failures, such as the one we encountered the other day. The main issue seems to be it's limited to the forums themselves, but if it were extended to the mainpage users could at least go there to check on the status of the problem. Of course you know it'll be jinxed now that I said it, but... Happy
