Small Compact Camcorder for traveling and kids

I need advice to find out a good small and compact with good sound quality camcorder with at least decent battery life. If possible, not too expensive.

"not too expensive" is not too helpful. "decent battery life" is not too helpful. Can you be a little more specific?

$300 $600? $900 or more?

20 minutes; 60 minutes or more? Pretty much all the batteires included in the box don't last too long (20 minutes?) An optional extra battery resolves this issue with any camcorder.

Will you be editing the video? On what sort of computer? Have you ever used a camcorder? Have you edited? You will also want a tripod and a good, sturdy case.
