Run all the scans in the exact order.
It will take some time to download and run all the scans.
Over the past few weeks, I've been noticing a very strange occurrence with my laptop, usually happening maybe around once every 30 minutes. No matter what I am doing on my laptop, whatever apps/windows/sites I may have open or closed, I will occasionally see what appears to be the outline of a small window/box flash in the center of my screen for JUST a second, then it goes away immediately. It doesn't obscure my view of anything, because it never actually fully loads into an actual window -- it basically just looks like that white outline of one. I don't really know the terminology well for these things, but the box looks like it is roughly the size of one of those windows that you've made smaller by clicking that button between 'minimize' and 'close' in the upper-right corner of any given window.
At first, I was thinking this is just a weird thing that happened a couple times, and since it never really caused any problems, I simply ignored it. Again, it just pops up, remains for seemingly less than a second, and then disappears as if it never happened. However, it's now gotten to the point that it's happening with enough frequency to actively annoy me, usually flashing up onto my screen multiple times during once session of laptop usage (maybe 3 times throughout the course of an hour.)
I'm starting to get kind of concerned that it could potentially be an indication of some type of infection or something, because I can't figure out what else could explain this. An issue with this hypothesis though is that I have that native 'Windows Defender' thing turned on, AND I have Kaspersky, and neither have warned me of anything lately (despite doing regular scans pretty frequently.) The only weird thing that I have noticed with Kaspersky's behavior is that it has been popping up in the bottom-right corner of the screen complaining about websites 'not having a verified certificate' (or something of that nature), and the only thing that it does is make me press continue before it allows most websites to load. This is also of course very annoying, but I think it's likely that that one is a whole other issue from this.
Lastly, I'm sorry that this post is so long, I just wanted to give a full explanation here because I'm getting a bit worried. So, does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this anomaly?
Please let me know your thoughts -- thanks in advance for any answers!
Thanks for the suggestion, Bob. I followed all of those instructions to a T, and the recommended programs did end up removing a few things from my computer (not many, though.)
The next day, though, I was using my computer again, and THE SAME EXACT THING AS BEFORE SHOWED UP ON MY SCREEN. And then, about an hour later, it happened AGAIN -- this time, it loaded for just long enough (still likely less than one second) that it could be definitely confirmed it was some sort of a pop-up window. This is getting highly frustrating! Do you have any idea what could be going on?? Please, I need help.
1. Go get tools like Autoruns, Hijackthis and learn what item does in the results.
2. Get on bleepingcomputer.com where they use deep reporting tools and folk that read such.
Since you completed the usual set of scans by Grif and tried the scans in safe mode, it's something else so you get to do deep dives into what the machine is doing.
