Question

Slow wifi (and laptop) only at home - help please!

Jul 11, 2017 7:46AM PDT

So far, no one has been able to help me with this and in the forums I try no one will even answer. I’ve run it by both professionals and laypeople and they either say it’s impossible or they don’t believe me, or, like the management at my apartment building, try to blame it on something wrong with my laptop(s). Here is the best description of the problem I can give you: When I'm at home, and only at home (an apartment building that provides wifi with 4-5 "points" to choose from), my wifi is dramatically slower than it is anywhere else (McDonald's, Starbucks, the library). I can never get through a short film on a short film site I like to use; I cannot stream radio audio without it being interrupted; Google Chrome locks up; and sometimes I cannot get through a Netflix movie - AND - the strangest thing (to me) - is that when it is at its slowest, my ENTIRE LAPTOP slows down, and "breathes hard" (for lack of a better term) - the fan vent lets out thee long "exhale" sounds like it's exhausted - Word and other programs slow down. If I disconnect from the internet everything goes back to normal. I have two laptops and a Kindle and all three act the same way when connected to the wifi at home - are fine everywhere else. Is there anything I can try on my end (settings? blocks? ect?) Moving is not an option. Thank you.

Run this test and see what kind of numbers you get.
http://beta.speedtest.net/

Now walk around the apartment and run the test from different locations.
See what kind of numbers you get.

Test in the hallway or lobby.
Get some numbers.

Answer
Open task manager

Open the task manager(ctrl-alt-del) and look under the cpu column, that should tell you exactly what's happening.
and make sure you set the wifi connections as metered because in windows 10 when you connect to home wifi it starts download updates automatically.

I changed it to "metered" like you suggested to no avail. What should I look for on task manager that might be causing or contributing?
