Slow Startup/Programs taking long to open

by pzebleckis / January 17, 2010 5:38 AM PST

I have a 2.79 GHz Dell desktop PC with 2 GB of RAM and Windows XP SP3 installed. Recently, I have noticed that my PC starts up slower than usual. Also, when opening programs (especially Firefox) it takes a long time before the program opens.

Another problem is that not all of the system tray icons are loading at startup. For example, my volume icon does not load in the system tray unless I open the volume properties, select not to view the icon, then reselect to view the icon. When I reboot, the icon is gone again.

I have used System Mechanic to repair all registry and system file problems. I have also uninstalled all programs that I do not use and have cleared out all "junk" files on the PC. The hard drive has been defragmented and the system memory has been defragmented.

Any suggestions on how to fix these problems would be greatly appreciated. I have considered reformatting and reinstalling Windows, but I really would like to avoid that option if possible.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
