slow startup onnew pc

Aug 5, 2005 4:13AM PDT

ever since I added more memery (2 gig) to my new pc the startup time slowed down quit a bit, I' sure that it has to due to the memory test function at post at cmos startup.
I have a Gateway 704GE that came with 1 gig of ram an I added 2 more gig, I tried Gateway support twice (filled out an online form)it checks my system online and the it submits the whole thing, so fare 5 weeks have past with no replay so you know where we are going.
I know all of you are going to tell me to turn off the memory test function in cmos but I can not find it anywhere in the setup screen.
Can anyone help.

memory test function?

Are you talking about when the computer is just booting up, black with white text? The part where it shows you speed of your memory? That is how its with mine. Just expand a little what it looks like and when it comes? I pretty sure we are on the same page, but not 100%. Well, the logical thing is maybe that the computer has to take a while to detect and allocate all the memory, maybe becuase its 3 gigs now? Maybe becuase it wasn't made by Gateway? Some motherboards require that you put the 512 Memory chips AFTER the 1 GB, yours may or may not. Maybe just try switching the slots.

What type...

of memory did you add? Is it the same as what you have in it? Memory checks should only take a few seconds. More than 5 seconds is a sign that something is not right. This 'slow down' is during POST or Windows?

and life goes on...

Just wondering. . .

Why you need 3 Gig of RAM? Are you plotting the orbital mechanics of the planets? Converting DVD to HD format? Analyzing the human genome?

Most have found that over one Gig is severe overkill.
