Slow process for shut down

When I close down my computer that I"ve had for a few years, now seems to take longer to shut down. I might have unknowingly deleted something in startup or who knows where. Is there a search I can perform in missing files tools or download something from this forum without going into registry, etc? Windows 98, not out of the box computer system, but designed by a computer friend. Here is sytem info. Thanks, Mike.

Click Start, Run, and type in sfc Follow the prompts, have the W98 CD ready. This will examine all the system files and compare them to the originals. If there are any that are corrupt, it will fix them. Be ready.

hit ctrl+alt+delete once to see what's running before you shut down. Over time, many programs add themselves to startup, including spies, and have to all be shutdown by windows before successfully writing to Hdd and shutting down. I've seen as many as 18 items running.
Also start>run>"msconfig">startup tab, to see what starts at startup. You can uncheck things that aren't really needed. You may also uncheck the load startup group items on main page, to see if you get a faster shutdown, proving that it is 1 or more items causing slowdown.

search for this free download. Caution, shut down all programs before using this at every shutdown. Read info that comes with it.
