slow ping times

by lechaun / December 29, 2008 11:25 AM PST

Hi I have a Dell Dimension 4600 w/ XP and when I ping google.com, it takes 84ms. However when I test the ping on a inspiron 531 w/ Vista, I get 24ms. Both are hardwired. Could it be the ethernet card, or outdated ethernet drivers, or just an old computer?

open a command shell prompt,

tracert www.google.com

some hops might time out, unfortunately some firewalls these days block icmp.

if they do make sure your router or a software firewall dosnt block icmp or ping.
