Slow launch

When I am connected to the internet the applications on my desktop computer launch quickly. When I am not connected they launch very slowly. I have a Lap top with exactly the same software (XP sp2, Adobe Elements, FileMaker Pro). The apps on the laptop launch quickly wether connected to the net or not. Can someone please tell me where to look? Thanks.

Do you have any different settings on the desktop computer for these programs compared to the laptop? It is possible that the apps are trying to connect to servers on the internet (ex. anti virus software trying to update).
