slow internet for Macbook in clamshell mode after 10.5.3

Jun 10, 2008 10:43AM PDT

Experiencing extremely slow internet when using my Macbook (2.2 GHz core 2 duo, 1 GB memory) in clamshell mode after updating to 10.5.3. I use my Macbook with an external monitor (samsung 22" syncmaster), keyboard and mouse (However, when using the external monitor with the MB?s top open I have no problem so I don?t think it?s a problem with the monitor as some others have had).

When using my Macbook with its top down the airport display shows only one or two bars, and I need to wait from ten seconds to a ?time out? for web pages to load on both Safari and Firefox. When I use the MB by itself I have no problems. The problem is not with the network as my roommate running a macbook 10.4.11 is fine (as well as a pc) and I have the same problem with slow Internet when connected to other networks.

Another problem I have had is with the sleep mode after updating to 10.5.2. The computer will not go to sleep when I leave the monitor and keyboard plugged in, also it will wake up at odd times (once every hour or so, this perhaps is due to the Bluetooth mouse I have connected).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS is there a way to ?rollback? the OS to 10.5.1 when everything was working so well, without going through a reinstall.

AFAIK

You have to do the Archive and install to rollback. There are clues in your post about the "top open" but since the wifi antenna is in that lid it's almost assured you are bumping into "how things work."

I suggest that if you are using this laptop as some desktop you consider getting wired.

Agreed!

I had this question marked for reply and then, after a senior moment, forgot all about it.

With the lid down, the antenna is not in the optimal place for receiving signals from your wireless source. This is one of the reasons that the antenna is located in the lid and not in the base.

As Bob suggested, a wired connection would cure this problem.

Archive and Install is the usual way to rollback the OS but, if you are using Time Machine, there is an alternate method.

Thanks, but...

Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a try.

However how would the update have affected the antenna? I was using it with the top down for the 6 months before updating to 10.5.3. Stranger things have happened, I'll give it a try later on this afternoon thanks again for the help.

I've moved things 2 inches and ...

Found dead spots or "it works better" so I can't say that it's a bona fide slamdunk it's the update.

Sorry, missed the bit about the update.

My wirless actually improved at .5.3 but under 4.11 it was a ton better.

After the uprgrade to Leopard, my 4 bars dropped to 2 bars with the airport in the same room.

Now back to 4.

Go figure.

In your case, placement "may" be the answer

Here are my thoughts
Jun 15, 2008 9:08AM PDT

I have sitting on a shelf here a somewhat dated HP monitor with the older 4:3 aspect ratio, as I think it's called. Nice LCD, but the square shape kind of defeats the purpose of using it with a Mac. Nevertheless, with my DVI to VGA adapter, I have connected it to my MacBook Pro several times. But, never have I had any success in closing the lid while using an external monitor as the primary viewing screen. Now I haven't tackled that in awhile, and I think I missed something, but that's not my point. From my experience, MacBooks and their larger counterparts are not built to run as desktops.

I was always under the impression that you could never close a MacBook and use it with external peripherals successfully. But, according to this Apple document, you can. I've had poor luck with this, but it can be done, contrary to my original belief. Look at that and see if you're doing something wrong. Still, I say you should leave it open if it works better that way. As for the 5.3 update, WiFi connections have been working even better on my MacBook Pro, but each to their own.
The position of your MacBook may be the key as to why it doesn't perform as quickly when closed, as has been said above. The AirPort antenna is supposedly placed in the bezel of the computer, so you are basically moving it to a poor position and causing it to receive less, though that seems strange that a few inches/feet would cause such a dramatic loss.

The computer is going to wake up from your external devices if they are still plugged in. Now if you follow the Apple document instructions, you may be able to avoid this. If you are connecting the display to the MacBook before closing the lid, then that could be where the conflict is coming from. See the doc and try that to avoid more problems with it.
Hope that helps.

interesting...i have a very similar problem
Jun 18, 2008 2:07PM PDT

i also own a macbook and a samsung syncmaster (the one that looks like their tv's do) but mine's 19". i don't use the macbook with the clamshell closed, but i find that as soon as i plug in the mini DVI cable to connect the monitor i lose my wifi signal almost entirely. the airport status even stays at 4 bars, but ftp transfers, browsing and email all struggle if they can even connect.

and then as soon as i unplug the monitor the transfers resume, pages load and emails start pouring in. i am at the opposite end of the house as the base station but there is a signal boosting antenna on the base station and works as long as i am not connected to the monitor.

i suspect it must be an issue with the samsung syncmaster monitors and not the clamshell being closed, or the antenna or macbook at all.

I also have a very similar problem, any ideas to help it?

My 13 inch macbook running 10.5.6 is doing almost exactly the same thing! I have been trying to use a Vison 19' monitor for an external with the laptop open, and as soon as I connect the external monitor, my wifi signal dies. The internet will work again immediately after I unplug the external monitor, and none of my other roommates (2 with macbooks and 2 with pc's, and I also have a pc mini computer) have internet problems. The one slight difference is that when I bought this external monitor about a month ago, I was in a different city, and the external monitor and macbook ran just fine together, and the internet worked perfectly. The only thing about the setup that has changed is my location. Help!!

same issue

Hello!
Has this problem been resolved? Does anyone have any further suggestions? I only have 2 GB of RAM. I'm wondering if it would help to update to 4 GB. This is very frustrating and disappointing!

Worked for Me

This drove me crazy. Would close my lid and WiFi gone. Tried everything.

Finally, moved wireless router closer and fixed it. Give it a try if you have the option.
