Slow DSL speed

Apr 18, 2005 12:43PM PDT

Running W98 with 384Mbyte SDRAM and Athlon 800 mHz.
Have had slow speed from day one. Verizon claims that the line passes the line test. Spent over 8 hours over a few days with their online support troublshooting. Tried new modem they sent, still only getting 838.6Kbits per second and 104.8KBytes per second on a 3.0 Mbyte DSL. Not great speed. Everything on my end appears to be OK. Any ideas?

Correct me if I'm wrong...but if you read your ISP's information, it probably says...get...UP TO 3Mbps. I'm sure that the techs asked you if you have your line filters on...and properly installed...thats important. Back to the ..UP TO. You will probably never get 3Mbps with your dsl. If you achieve 1.5, thats already good. Has nothing to do with your equipment, most of the time, but everything to do with where you and your ISP is located and the distance between the both of you. The closer you are to the main ISP the better the speed. You can try to test your line, if you haven't already with bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/. This will tell you how you compare with similar and your region. Good Luck
PS. This may not be your case at all, but some ISP's may limit your speed, even though they say they don't.

OK my error on the 3.0MByte DSL.
I'm getting 836.8KBits/104.6Kbytes per second using my ISP's speed test. Even their tech support agrees with me that those are not average speeds for my package of 3.0MBits per second. After spending over 8 hours over 3 days online with tech support they have escalated my trouble ticket to their maintenance dept.I'm waiting to see what happens next.

My ISP is Verizon. They sent a technician to the house to check out the inside wiring and the wall jack the DSL modem is plugged into. At the jack he got 3.3Mbits per second with some type of meter. I Checked with Linksys about the NIC card and it is working OK. So according to these folks the only thing left is my computer.
Now what?

Went to site and found the tweaks needed for W98SE with the tweak test but found nothing about how to go about changing settings.

to have 1 of the tweakers help you with your RWIN and MTU settings, but you can use DrTCP to do it yourself.
http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/578
Your RWIN should be 65535 and MTU for PPPoE set at 1492.

It appears that tweaking did the job! Why doesn't the ISP's know this, rather than wasting their's and customer's time? The speed is almost triple of what it was before tweaking!
Thanks people for the help!

I wish you luck. I had (and still have) similar problems. For over 2 weeks I could not get a connection to Internet Explorer, and when I finally did at 2:39 a.m. in the morning, it was very sluggish.

Check your telephone wires. If there is a slight break or tear in your wire it will interfere with your connection as well as your connection speed.

You have probably done this, but make sure your modem is near the telephone outlet and that you use the cable that Verizon gave in your modem kit. Also use a longer ethernet cable to connect to your computer if it is located a distance from the telephone outlet.

The Verizon technicans who spent hours helping me were VERY patient. Once again, good luck with all the solutions I hope you get!

Verizon, to put it bluntly sucks.I got up one morning and my speed was 14. Slower than a dial up. I went through about 3 days of BS with them and gave up. If you can go to cable, cost a little more but believe me, worth it other wise stick to dial up.

I think the problem may not be just Verizon, but..

DSL in general; I just don't think they are reliable enough (at least not for 24/7). It is too easy to for them to be interfere with. But for the price I can put up with it (of course that for me only).
