Question

Slow down with old router used as a bridge. Please help.

Mar 30, 2016 7:49PM PDT

Hi my old roommate setup my old router (D Link) to use as a bridge (act like a switch because I have so many wired devices and to move my new main router from back to front of my basement) and then my new main router (Netgear Nighthawk) connects to it. Never had a problem getting full internet speed before.

I had to reset my main router recently and although my internet connection works, it's VERY slow and seems to be acting strange.

When he first set it up I remember he changed some of the #'s like DNS on the old D Link and had to look up ipconfig etc to set it all up.

Does anyone know if I have to make changes on my main router that I reset? When I open Chrome it says connecting... and resolving connection etc and takes a very long time to open things.

Thanks.

Answer
So two routers?

When I use a second router I configure it as a WAP. If you are using it as a router, you take a hit. Your choice. Also, I find old routers can degrade a high speed connection.

Yes, two routers.

huh? I've been using two routers for a year and never had ANY problems!

Only since I've reset the newer main router have I had a problem. Wifi direct to new router is fine, it seems to be only the old router which my PC is wired too which is having the problem.

Time to try it as a WAP now.
