We still have a Gen 1 Core i7-xxx (can't remember which one and it's great.
Let me share it's setup. 8GB RAM (2x4GB), 500GB SSD and then pretty much stock. It seems to not have been affected by any update as to it's speed.
If you are on spinning rust HDD, that's where we find the delays are at.
What, if anything, can be done with an 8 year old, Intel Core i7-870 CPU @ 2.93GHz, 8MB Cache (95 watt), Quad Core, 64 bit computer, running Win 10, that, after the processor security bug software update about a year ago, is slower than a snail? It was a decent computer that did what was needed in a decent amount of time prior and I would prefer to fix rather than replace.
