Slow Comp (Worm???)

Jul 27, 2004 11:45PM PDT

I have had a slow comp lately. I have 504 MB RAM persario and the comp is very very slow. Also some programs will not load fully. I have just recently noticed this problem as i just got back from a job training trip. My kids were on and they said they noticed it. I have tried almost every Norton Removal tool and have had no success. I have done all the usual stuff(defrag ram, defrag drive, cleanup, etc.) and wanted to know if anyone has any input on if this is a worm, virus, trojan, etc. or if it is a overlying comp problem. Also I have looked into memory leakage but even when i dont run programs it is slow. Any and all help is appreciated

Do your operating system updates, start - windows update if thats what you are running.

Look on this site for spyware removal tool links and do those things (most are free). adaware, spybot, and others are additions to anti-virus that you need. Norton by itself doesn't do all you need. malware is rampant and causes slowdowns because it uses your computer.

If after doing all the checks you still have a slowdown, then start looking for what may have been added or changed while you were gone (besides malware).

Past that look for emerging hardware problems or heat issues. Try running the system with the case removed to see if cooling will help. Make sure the inside is clean and dust free (be very carefull & cautious - no power).

As you eliminate things, you can post more specific questions and include your system type, O/S and full configuration for better help.

1. The article [Q811493] explains that you may experience slower computer performance after you install the 811493 (MS03-013) security update package on a computer that is running WinXP Service Pack 1 (SP1), or after you upgrade to SP1 on a Windows XP-based computer on which the 811493 security update was previously installed, and that the patch can be removed if installed. This problem may be more likely to occur if you use some features of some third-party programs such as antivirus programs. For example, this problem may occur if your antivirus program is configured to scan all files when you open (or you run) them. This is sometimes called "real-time" scanning.

2. "Computer Speed and Performance May Decrease (Q3104119)."

3. The article [Q812337] explains that a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Pavilion computer may run very slowly after installing the HP software update for the Universal Serial Bus (USB) multimedia keyboard, and you may also notice the CPU is running at 100%, with the Kbd.exe file taking up over 90% of the resources.

4. File transfers and printing done by means of infrared data association (IrDA) may be slow and a print job may time out and stop printing, or it may take an extremely long time to complete, [Q823979].

5. The article [Q810063] explains the situation that when using a USB keyboard and mouse connected to a USB 2.0 Controller, they are slow to respond after a hibernation event.

Note: My two-cents also but from reading your return comments already, the "it didn't work" or "I tried that before" as an answer isn't telling what part(s) of the suggestion(s) you're doing if any and without some comprehensive return of procedures used and facts of the troubleshooting process, we can't know what if anything was accomplished. Since I read "Norton" was involved I'm not to sure that eveything you're trying to accomplish isn't being circumvented.

I am having a similar problem. I have A Dell Diminision 8200 with 512 RAM. It takes at least a minute to get from the Windows xp screen to the Welcome screen. And it takes at least 90 seconds to load personal settings. And it takes at least 30 seconds to load an application. I, too, have tried all the regular things. Even took a lot of stuff off the startup. Could it be a worm? Have done a scan with Norton, but nothing is identified.
