slow boot up and program load up time

I bought a HP laptop in Jan 2004 (Pentium 1.7, 768 meg ram, 60 gig hard drive, with Windows XP pro). My computer seems to be getting slower and slower with the start up (sometimes a minute), but at times it will load up very fast. I check my msconfig to make sure that I have the minimum amount of start up programs. Can anyone give me some other ideas on how to speed up my computer's start up.

Try this...

I'll take it that MALWARE is under control and you've run DISK CLEANUP and checked off all the boxes except compress old files...

What I do is to set the IDE controllers to PIO, ok my way out and then go in and set them to DMA IF AVAILABLE, then OK my way out. Some just look at the setting and will not understand this Microsoftism in which a setting looks OK, but is in reality operating in the slower mode.

You don't have any broken issue, just a dealy during winodws XP startup. Probale you have all sorts of USB devices. Some of them being connected / disconnected power on might be an explanation for the seen difference.

Good Luck,
