Veronica should especially love this (considering her new TiVo acquisition)...
Yesterday, I was lucky enough to see and play with a beta version of the Sling Mobile Player that SlingMedia announced at CES. The guy was using a Treo 700w (I believe they will support any Smartphone/WM-5 device). He said that you need to be a high-speed network, and was using Verizon's EVDO network at the time (which costs him $30/month on top of his regular service for unlimited use).
He was watching AND CONTROLLING his TiVO, which was sitting in his family room -- at home, through his Slingbox (personal video streaming server). He also switched over and controlled his cable box, and said he regularly watches the ON DEMAND programing from Comcast!
The picture was surprisingly good, 20-30 frames per second as his connection speed to Verizon varied (or perhaps his wife was uploading files at his house)...and by the way, we were in the back of a moving van at the time!! He said he regularly lets his kids use it when he's driving, and they watch it for a half-hour or more at a time.
I have a Humax TiVo, with DVD burner, so I could even stream DVDs to myself!
You know, this totally skirts the DRM issues. You're remote controlling your own hardware, not copying anything -- wow. If these guys can win the lawsuits that may follow (which looks, in my opinion, very likely), this will be incredible.
This was REALLY cool, and I am soooo jealous.
I definitely want one. It's $250, and ince I already have broadband cable, all I need is SmartPhone on 3G - no monthly service fees!
Best,
David from Philly
