...is this while braking?...or just driving along?...how fast are you going?...what kind of tires are you using?...chains or not?...motor running or not?...standard or automatic transmission?...what kind of car?...like approximate weight?...antilock brakes or not?...you know, all those things that can affect braking effectiveness and employability. Another parameter may be whether there's snow on the ice or is it just plain unadulterated ice?

Just keep the ride nice and slow. Buy winter tires and always have the chains on.
