Resolved Question

Slide show running on Lock Screen has stopped

Jan 4, 2014 8:40AM PST

My slide show on lock screen was working. I did a clean boot install of Windows 8.1 to speed things up, but now the slide show on lock screen no longer works.

I am running Windows 8 64 bit with 6 gig of memory. All the drivers are up to date and everything else seems to run great since 1/1/14 clean install.

Symptoms: When time is used up before the slide show starts the lock screen comes up. No slide show, but after a minute the lock screen disappears and screen goes blank.

Using the same picture directory with the old screensaver, makes a slide show display on screen blanking.

Does anyone have an idea to make this work again on the lock screen?

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Found the cause, not necessarily the big fix
Jan 25, 2014 8:05AM PST

I found that System Mechanic which I use had found a large number of registry errors. I let it correct those and from that point on, the slideshow on lock screen did not work.

After I thought of that possibility, I un-did that registry fix and the slide show worked. After that, I checked for registry errors again with System Mechanic and it did not find any errors.

I don't know how to avoid this in the future, I like System Mechanic, but I do know how to immediately fix the problem if it happens again.

True.

A clean install of the OS is just that. On most machines there are drivers and helper apps that are required. Because many folk are new to installing windows they get a little too far in the deep end of the pool and confused. They might ask what's a helper app. There are many out there but the make and model is not supplied.

Be sure to ask the maker of this PC "How to install Windows?"

Built this PC
Jan 7, 2014 8:20AM PST

This is a PC that I built. Worked fine with Win 7. Then Win 8 came along and I installed that. Then Win 8.1 was installed.

There were many changes made and I like to reload system every two years. So that is why I was reloading.

I have rebuilt many PCs and reloaded many, so I am not a novice as the comment was targeted.

Every function of Win 8.1 seems to be working except this function I need some help on. Does anyone have experience with the details behind what it takes to make this function work? It was working before the reload and all drivers are updated so I am sure it is something simple that I am not seeing.

Thanks, in advance.

Unless you reveal more
Jan 7, 2014 10:24AM PST

Unless you reveal more I have to go with a missed driver or helper app. There are many open discussions about "screensaver does not run" but of the few thousand causes I have no way to filter it down to your PC.

That's why I suggested you make it a warranty issue with its maker. If you are the maker then it's gets rough as you ask the motherboard maker and other suppliers what they think.

It worked with 7 does not mean it will with 8.1.
