Resolved Question

Skype won't open

by dubiousraves / June 15, 2014 5:24 AM PDT

Hi. Recently Skype jams when I try to open it. The "wheel" just turns endlessly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled different versions a few times and I get the same issue. On on a Windows laptop 64 bit Vista.

Any ideas? Thanks loads.

Did you try the usual resets?

resets don't work
by dubiousraves / June 15, 2014 2:26 PM PDT

Yes, I tried this before, and I just tried it again. Didn't work. One problem with it may be that Windows won't let me rename the Skype folder. It asks for Administrator permission, which I have and give, but it still won't rename the folder.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Since you did not accomplish the steps.

You'll want to use the usual tools and methods to rename or delete that folder. Remember that is well discussed and I think many would have covered this before so I'll stop here.

Bob, your response was not helpful. But I solved the problem anyway.

How was it solved?

Help others with your solution otherwise your solution is unhelpful. I noted the most common fix but that won't help if folk don't complete the work or give up too soon. A lot is on the web today so I keep it short at times.

The solution

OK, here's how I solved it. Someone on a Skype forum said to rename the Skype folder (found by typing %appdata% on the run prompt) to Skype_old. But something was keeping me from doing that. I couldn't rename it. So then I tried deleting it. I couldn't do that either, but this time I did get a message saying the folder was already in use so couldn't be deleted.

At that point I went back to the Skype forum and noticed that many users were getting that same message. One of them proposed rebooting the computer, then immediately renaming or deleting the Skype folder. I tried that and was able to rename it, and now Skype is working again.

So... the moral of the story is, the techie on the Skype forum should tell people to reboot if at first they are unable to rename or delete the Skype folder.

Cheers,
DR
