SKYPE Between Melbourne and Manila keeps dropping

May 26, 2010 11:47AM PDT

Hi,
My parents went back to Manila to retire. To keep constant communication I bought them a Lenovo with MS Win 7 OS and installed Skype. In their area, DSL is not an option so I bought them a smart bro (USB plugin modem with prepaid SIM for broadband connection) . I just got back to Melbourne yesterday and tried calling them via Skype. It would only connect for 1 minute before dropping. On top of that the video looks like a still shot. The audio was so choppy that I gave up. I ended making overseas phone call.
Can someone please let me know if there is anything else I can do?
My parents are so desperate to see their grandchildren on a regular basis. I thought skpe would be the answer.
Thanks,
FdR

Where in Manila?

Those 3G modems (Smart, Globe, Sun) are almost identical in speed but not sure if its reliable for video calling or even VoIP talk. If you really sure that a wired DSL line isn't available to your parent's house then maybe try Globe or Sun prepaid.

I have both Globe and Smart and it really depends where you at when connecting to internet, on some areas Smart connection is okay but not Globe and vice versa. Sometimes both are good and other times both sucks.

Also if you can ask your parents to check their Smart connection if its VoIP tolerable. Tell them to go here for VoIP connection test.

Latency should be 250ms or below to get good call quality. I use VoIP all the time, calling US numbers or Philippine mobile and sometimes even Aussie numbers and most of the time (90 percent) calls are very good. I use Onesuite VoIP for all these calls but with PLDT DSL so I am not sure how's the quality with Smart or Globe.

Oh and check this tips for improving VoIP or at least knowing how to troubleshoot VoIP connection.

Thank you for your input. It is a bit hard to solve their problem remotely especially because they are not as comfortable and familiar with technology. At the moment, I am just using skype to call their land line. This will do for now.

How much is the rates?

How much are you paying for calling Philippines using Skype? With Onesuite I pay 12.5c per minute whether I'm using it as a phone card or VoIP.
