skype and adware

Hi, I am interested to give Skype a try, my concern is based on my experience years ago when I tried Netzero, I remember in order to use it have to dowload/install their software and that become a nightmare as was almost imposible to get rid of whatever they installed in my computer.
How safe is to install their software as it relates to unwanted spyware.
I use WinXP Home and the usual Spyware control via Ad-Aware, Webroot.

But then again some will download it from a non-trustworthy site then all bets are off. But as it stands, it's only skype in the package.
