Six Bluray Player Shootout

Sep 24, 2008 4:48AM PDT

at Value Electronics. Executed by a couple of AVS members. Tested are

Pioneer BDP-51
Pioneer BDP-05
Panasonic BD50
Samsung 1500
Sony S350
Sony PS3

Samsung rated worst, others are more or less even, varying pros/cons. It was the only player to fail video reconstruction.

For film resolution loss, only the Panasonic passed. OTOH, it exhibited the most shift in color points.

for HD video resolution loss, the 350 and 1500 failed. Both of these units were said to suffer slight hitch in low end color temp.

For either Panny's shift, or Sammy/Sony's hitch, effects are said to be subtle.

PS3?
Sep 25, 2008 12:03AM PDT

I can't DL the results since that site is blocked by websense for me at work, but from the avsforum thread it seems not much is mentioned about the PS3's capabilities? Am I right on that?

The most obvious advantage of the PS3 is load time. IMO, this has little bearing in what I would choose, especially since its just seconds, but it seems that many do care a lot.

King of startup speed: 35 secs from disc insertion to video displayed. Others are 43, 45, 46, and 50.

Power on to visible GUI is 10 secs. Others 20, 25, 32.

There were 5 main tests, really 4 and 1 of those with 2 halves.

PS3 passed every test except in one half of the Film Resolution Loss test. It passed Moton adaptive processing, but failed Half resolution processing. Don't ask me what these are, because I don't know.

eD/803

My eD A2-300 has been treating me well. When I moved I got more options to place it so I put it just behind my couch so I am within its proximity resonance field for some extra umpf. It shakes my sofa so that feels pretty sweet with movies. I have a VERY open living space so I was worried about filling it well with the sub, but with it right behind my sofa and about like 3 feet from my listening position I don't really lose anything.

My Onkyo 803 has been chugging along just fine, never an issue with it. I think I'll be able to hold onto it for a few more years since eventually I'll get a PS3 to cover the HD codec decoding. I'll probably upgrade when I need more HDMI outputs at some point.
