Site Overhaul

Aug 18, 2008 10:29AM PDT

Today, I have seen some of the newly redesigned pages here on CNET. Honestly, the new look seems very good, and I like the changes that are being made to the community profiles and home pages. However, I noticed that at the CNET home page, many links are missing from the the link bar at the top.

Home, Reviews, News, Downloads, and CNET TV, are present, but Tips and Tricks, Prices, and Blogs are gone. Furthermore, if I click on any link, the site reverts back to the older style. Every time I come to the site, the pages jump back and forth between the new beta pages and the old. How annoying. Anyone else notice this?

BTW, I did send some positive feedback on the new improvements, but that was before I noticed that the pages were inconsistent. I'll send another form in. Again, the new CNET looks good.

The first one is deliberate...

The absence of the Tips and Tricks, Prices, and Blogs tabs is deliberate...Blogs are part of News while Prices and Tips and Tricks are part of Reviews. From cnet.com there are links in the left-hand nav column, but aside from that you need to go to the 'parent' category to see the individual sections of Cnet.

As the the 'jumping' back and forth, it's likely due to your cookie not being read properly. During the beta period that's how access to the new site is controlled, but it won't be a potential problem once the site goes live. Deleting your cookies and waiting to be 'reinvited' should resolve it for now.

Cookie problems, eh?

I use the latest versions of Safari and Firefox. I would think that new site pages should be able to handle these properly. I have cookies set to their default configurations, so there shouldn't be any problems, but who knows.

Thanks for the navigation tips. I see the panes now. Very helpful to know where everything is. Wink

So I take it the beta will be opened up to more and more of CNET's users until it is unveiled, correct? Is there a particular launch date? Just curious.

Tips and Tricks pane

"Tips and Tricks" redirects to an empty page. "Page not found". I guess the links have to be worked on a little more.

They do not exist...

-> The Tips & Tricks section was a budget cut some months back...all Cnet courses were removed, leaving only short user-submitted tips and the forums under the "Tips & Forums" heading.

-> The cookie setup is temporary and, in my experience, can be glitchy. Just a beta issue, though...it won't carry over.

-> I've heard no launch date, just that it's the current priority and will go live once it's ready. But inviting more and more people at random until it goes live is the idea, and they're updating various aspects of the site daily.

Alright then

I'm now seeing the new and improved forums on my PC here, and they look great. Still switching back and forth, but this must be as expected. Oh well. Thanks for the input.
