Question

singlemizer versus decloner - any advise ?

May 3, 2011 10:39AM PDT

I was looking at sorting through several different back up drives, and started wondering about what kind of software was available to find duplicates.

well right now, I'm trying out DeCloner. It does certain things OK but I have noticed that it also has missed some obvious duplicates and triplicate files and frankly, I don't know why.

"Obvious" duplicates may not be the same

Hi, I'm the developer of Decloner. Decloner is very reliable in determining if the files are the same-it uses cryptographic hash algorithm called SHA-1 for that. Even if files have very "obviously" similar names, it doesn't mean their content is the same. Decloner only shows files that contain exactly the same information down to the last bit. If the files you think are the same aren't in the list, it means they are different. Granted, the difference may be minor and not really that important to you (like MP3 or picture metadata), but Decloner doesn't do fuzzy matching. I hope that clarifies the issue.

Thank you for your response. I had already thought...

... of the fact that there might be slight differences in files, and that would account for it being missed by the Decloner program. Consequently I made copies of the files originally missed by Decloner, using the "duplicate" feature in the finder.

Could you email me the files Decloner missed?

I'd be interested to look at the files, and hopefully find out why that happened. Thank you for the alternating colours suggestion, very useful. And thanks for your purchase!
