Question

Since Yosemite, can't open Mail & Safari at same time

Mar 11, 2015 12:44AM PDT

Since I upgraded to Yosemite, I get messages of insufficient memory when I open Mail and Safari at the same time. I have a 2008 Macbook with 2 GB of memory. This was sufficient in previous operating system iterations. I thought at first that my iTunes library might be too large, so I deleted half of it and still get the same message of 1.73 GB of used memory. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Clarification request: Is virtual memory off?

According to the Activity Monitor, it is on. Physical Memory is 2.00 GB, Memory Used is 1.98 GB, Virtual Memory is 3.00 GB, and Swap Used is 22.0 MB.

That's very strange.

I'd expect more "Used" under these conditions. I'd ask around how to restart the VM system.

Don't know if it'll help?

Here's what you would do:
sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist
sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist

Answer
2GB of RAM is barely sufficient to run Yosemite

let alone the programs it contains.

Updating to 4GB, mean you lose the 2 X 1GB sticks, will brighten things up for you
